The first step in unclog bathtub drain is to look at it and see if you can see what’s blocking it.  A build up of hair and scuzzy soap scum can actually close up a drain in bathtubs.

When you see hair in the bottom of the drain, you can just reach in and pull the clog out. To make it easier you can try bending a wire coat hanger to hook onto the clog to pull it out.

If you can’t see hair or pieces of soap that clog the bathtub, the second step is to try plunging the drain. Fill enough water in the bathtub or sink to cover the bottom of the plunger, block the overflow outlet with a rag, put the plunger over the drain, and push down and up several times, six or seven times.

The pressure should open up the pipe and clear any clog. The water should quickly drain away when you lift up the plunger. If it doesn’t, try plunging again - you might have just moved the blockage down the pipe where it got stuck again.

If a plunger doesn’t work to unclog bathtub drain, you need a long flexible steel cable wound on a handle. This cable need to be fed down through the overflow plate opening. It easily removes the hair and other debris clogging your drains, without chemicals. One of this kind of cable is called Yellow Drain Sweep. It has 48 inch -long inch. At one point Drain Sweep was stuck and it had to be moved forward and backward and sideways and pull it out with force.

Another product to unclog bathtub drain is Cobra Products 400 Zip-It drain cleaning tool. It can be used to unclog kitchen drain too. The insert measures 17 inches and needs to be discarded after each use. This is a great, environmentally friendly alternative to harsh drain clearing chemicals.
